Formal Gardens

Les Confines is famous for its staggering landscaped formal gardens. Created by the much fêted landscape gardener Dominique Lafourcade, the gardens of Les Confines have been lauded in numerous publications: Country Life, The International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, to name but a few.

Whilst admiring the formal gardens from the viewing platform, atop the plane tree by the terrace, a majestic oeuvre of cypress trees, laurel and enormous terracotta pots containing olive trees can be seen.  Through the blending of geometrical topiary and landscapes, sculptures, trees and shrubs grown locally in the Alpilles, an enfilade of enchanting secluded gardens have been formed.

Dusty pink garlands of wisteria coiled around trellises whose posts are adorned at the bottom with velvet purple irises form a pathway that lead towards the African Garden. On the other side of the garden another wisteria entwined pathway leads towards the Portugese Garden and the Ball Garden. Each of these private gardens, just like rooms in a house, have their own individual feel and have been designed in keeping with their allocated theme.
